?With so many places to visit with animals including petting farms near Birmingham and large farms with acres of land, we are spoilt for choice. In and around the West Midlands kids of all ages can have a great day exploring and spending time with many animals.
?Childrens’ farms offer fun interactive activities like feeding lambs, milking cows, bouncy pillows and tractor rides. Visitors of all ages will have a great time at a park farm. Many children’s farms in the west midlands also have play areas, picnic spots, and cafes where you can relax and enjoy a snack while the kids burn off some energy. One of our favourites, Attwell Farm Park has just won an award from Visit Worcester for “large visitor attraction of the year”
No matter which farm you choose to visit, you can be sure that your children will have a fantastic time learning about and interacting with animals in a safe and fun environment. So pack a picnic, grab your wellies, and head out to one of these fantastic children’s farms in the West Midlands for a family day of outdoor fun and adventure.
1. Attwell Farm Park
Address: Seafield Lane, Redditch, B98 9DB.
Attwell Farm Park is relatively new on the scene but it’s been our favourite for a while. A beautiful farm park in Worcestershire which makes a great place for a visit. There is the usual range of farm animals to meet and greet outdoors and in their huge barn, plus there’s a cow shed and a barn outdoors with smaller animals such as bunnies and pigmy goats. The reason Arlo loves Attwell Farm Park is because of the extras, they have a huge bouncy pillow, a decommissioned fire engine and a newly revamped outdoor play area – plus indoor soft play, ride-on pedal tractors and a giant sandpit in the play barn. It’s a great all-round family day out and one of the best farms near Birmingham to visit on a rainy day due to its enormous soft play. A small on-site cafe serves a delicious array of well-priced snacks too.
2. Umberslade Farm
Address: Butts Lane, Tanworth in Arden, Solihull, B94 5AE.
Umberslade Farm was one of the first children’s farms near Birmingham we ever visited. They used to host animal talks throughout the day but now it’s all about visiting the beautiful indoor play area and the cafe, but you can still explore the farm yard and take a wander through the estate as it is open to the public. The farmyard pigs have the funniest names and the barn is home to lambs and calves. My personal favourite is the shire horses, whereas Arlo loves the ponies because he had a pony ride trekking experience (book separately) as a Christmas treat. The indoor adventure playground is a beautiful addition and is available to book privately. This farm on the outskirts of Birmingham also hosts forest school sessions, educational visits and some exciting events.
The wonderful indoor play area is made from natural wood and there is also a brilliant outdoor park area with climbing frames for all ages. The on-site cafe serves food and hot drinks too. This is a lovely little farm to visit with toddlers for a couple of hours for some quiet in the countryside. Make sure you head out past the duck pond to greet the chickens. If you fancy a long walk the Estate has very scenic views.
3. Hatton Country World
Address: Dark Lane, Hatton, Warwick, CV35 8XA.
Hatton Country World is one of the more expensive family farm days out in the Midlands but it’s worth visiting, especially around Easter time when it’s lambing season and all the cutest little chicks are around to meet too. Hatton seems to have the most family-friendly animals in its petting barn. The guinea pig village is an enviable setting too! When it comes to animals there’s no shortage of creatures, with snakes lizards and exotic animals as well as the usual farmyard animals. My favourite event is the Sheep Grand National which is thoroughly enjoyable to watch, and Arlo loves the bird of prey shows and experiences. Hatton also has fabulous indoor play areas with free admission included with your farm ticket.
Hatton is also home to a shopping village and hosts regular events such as the drive in movies and arts and crafts fayres throughout the year. Look out for the Tulip Festival which adds a new flower field attraction to the local event calendar.
4. Oak Tree children’s Farm
Oak Tree Farm in Walsall is a low-cost alternative farm in the west midlands – ideal for an afternoon out and about, it’s £3 for a little bucket of animal food, and it’s the kind of place to spend a couple of hours on a quiet afternoon, with a small play area and plenty of room for a picnic and light refreshments from the cafe available.
5. Forge Mill Farm
Address: Forge Lane, West Bromwich B71 3SZ.
This little farmyard is based on the Sandwell Valley site in the heart of the West Midlands and is just that, a small yard with the usual farm animals but in the most beautiful Victorian setting. They have recently changed their location in the park and moved to a bigger space so there’s a lovely trail to follow up past the pigs which is ideal for little ones to get a taste of the outdoors. I found lots of historical info on Forge Mill fascinating. Adults entry is just £2, kids £1.50 and under 2’s are free. You can buy bags of animal food for under £1 and wander around as many times as you like. It’s perhaps one of the most accessible children’s farms. Last year a new indoor play barn opened which means that this park is a great place to visit no matter the weather. We like to spend about an hour here before trekking across the bridge around Sandwell Valley Country Park and on a nature trail around Swan Lake.
6. Bodenham Arboretum
Okay so this isn’t a place where the children’s farm is the main attraction, but in the middle of the mature woodland grounds, there’s a working farm yard so you can enjoy a lovely wander around the pools and through the “deep dark woods” before meeting the cows, chickens and donkeys and heading back towards the main pool to spot the fish and ducks. This is a real working farm and is open to the public year-round when visiting the Arboretum.
7. Lower Drayton Farm

Lower Drayton Farm is a delightful place to visit, offering a unique and memorable experience for the whole family. Possibly one of the most visitor-friendly farms near Birmingham. It has a friendly atmosphere and there are lots of things to do here. Huge indoor soft play areas, and outdoor play areas with zip wires. Located within proximity to Junction 13 of the M6 this farm provides ample opportunities for fun and adventure. From interacting with friendly farm animals to exploring the vast outdoor play areas, there is something for everyone to enjoy. This is one of the best places to organise large groups for birthday parties as they have the space and resources to create great fun. The farm also offers camping options, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rustic charm of the surroundings. Whether it’s experiencing the bustling atmosphere during Christmas time or embracing the beauty of nature in the summer, Lower Drayton Farm promises endless excitement and entertainment.
8. Little Owl Farm
Address: Owl Hill Lane, Dunhampton, Stourport-on-Severn, DY13 9SS.
In Stourport Little Owl Farm Park has one of our favourite small animal experiences with the chicks and guinea pigs. They have the friendliest and most patient teams with an indoor play area, cafe and all important ride on tractors too. This makes it another good place to explore with families and children of all ages. Whilst in the area, Riverside Meadows has a fabulous splashpad in the park and is only about ten minutes drive away.
9. All Things Wild
Address: Station Road, Honeybourne, Evesham, WR11 7QZ.
Not just a farm, if you need a full day out with more animals than you can dare to dream of then this is the ideal family-friendly farm in the West Midlands to explore. This is one of our favourite wildlife parks and is home to some rare breeds and more exotic creatures. One of their main attractions is their land of the living dinosaurs, which in my humble opinion is better than the WMSP exhibition. (Disclaimer: the dinosaurs aren’t real). The best bit is the goats and sheep walk through which gets you some close-up experiences with furry four-legged friends.
They have two outdoor children’s play area spaces, an indoor soft play and the “biggest and bestest” mud kitchen ever! (According to Arlo). My favourite however is the barefoot Walk. It truly is a lovely place to explore with large areas of wide open space great for picnics in the summer. Arlo loves the gift shop here too. This is the perfect place to have a brilliant day out with young people, especially for a special event and well worth the drive out.
10. Sedgley Adventure Centre

This is the place to visit for forest fun, a whole new area to explore for outdoor lovers, and the main attraction is mini golf surrounded by Animals which you can pet. It’s quite a surreal experience I must admit but so much fun to be had. This isn’t a huge place to explore but great for a couple of hours.
11. Ash End House Farm

14. National Forest Adventure Farm

If you want to see highland cows the this is the place! Its a lovely little farm where you can book special experiences to meet and greet the cows on the farm. The tea room has a lovely array of treats so if you’re in the area then it’s well worth popping in for a cake and coffee – I recommend the pasties as they are mouth watering
24. Cotswold Farm Park

Okay this place isn’t actually in Birmingham but it is do-able from South Brum in about an hours drive so it is a great place to take a day trip out so I had to include it on the list. Adam Hensons farm has the most beautiful of petting areas where you can hold chicks and feed goats. I have to give a special shout out to Strawberry the cow who Arlo loves to check in with every time we visit. I like to take a whole day exploring the farm, and then pause in one of the many beautiful local villages for a spot of shopping and an evening meal.
