1. Wrens Nest Heritage Site
Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve is a classic geological site of exceptional importance for the quality and diversity of its fossils and spectacular mining heritage. This is one of the most notable geological locations in the British Isles and visited and studied by geologists from all over the world. It was England’s first national nature reserve established for its exceptional limestone geology in 1956. It’s a large open area with four walks and various sculptures and viewing platforms. There’s some “scree” slopes where you can dig to find your own fossils and with over 700 types you’re sure to strike it lucky.

2. RSPB Middleton Lakes
Beautiful and tranquil, Middleton Lakes is a mosaic of wetlands, meadows and woodland in the heart of the River Tame Valley. Several kilometres of trails lead visitors through a variety of rich habitats, alive with a variety of birds including grey herons, kingfishers and lapwings. There is a visitor hub which is mostly open on weekends for ice creams and light refreshments, and at the nearby Middleton Hall Courtyard there are toilet facilities and a cafe serving hot and cold snacks.

3. RAF Cosford Museum
The Royal Air Force Museum Midlands offers a fun, award-winning day out for all the family. Entry is free and we’re open daily from 10.00am.
Visit the National Cold War Exhibition with its eye-catching architecture and design. Discover Cold War stories in immersive Hotspots; explore thrilling displays of aircraft, iconic cars, models, tanks and even life-sized Russian dolls. Come and marvel at the world’s oldest Spitfire and several other classic aircraft in our War in the Air Hangar. You must book online for a timed entrance ticket. There are often additional events and attractions which incur an additional charge such as a red arrows simulator flight but it is not essential to the visit.

4. Cannock Chase
One of our favourite woodland areas to visit is Cannock Chase for its Gruffalo trail but there is so much more it has to offer. With a children’s play area, Go Ape, orienteering trails and even a dog activity trail, you will not be stuck for something to do at Cannock Chase Forest, located north of Birmingham. They have a range of woodland walks to suit all ages and abilities, and for those wanting to explore the forest on two wheels, make sure to check out the cycling trails for some of the best family and mountain biking opportunities in the Midlands. You can hire a bike from the cycle centre, bring a picnic or lunch at the cafe. Come rain or shine, you will all go home having had a fantastic forest adventure.

5. Woolaton Hall Natural History Museum and Deer Park
Wollaton Hall is a magnificent Elizabethan country house located in Nottingham, England. Himley Hall and Park is a historic estate located in Himley, Staffordshire, England is one of our favourite free places to visit in the Midlands. The hall, a Grade II listed building, dates back to the 18th century and was originally built as a hunting lodge for the Lords of Dudley. It has since been converted into a popular visitor attraction. Surrounded by picturesque parkland, Himley Park offers stunning views and a serene atmosphere for visitors to enjoy. It features manicured gardens, tranquil lakes, and scenic walking trails, making it a perfect place for a leisurely stroll or a family picnic. The hall itself boasts beautiful architecture and elegant interiors. Visitors can explore the grand reception rooms, including the magnificent Great Hall and Drawing Room.
