5 Screen Free Activities for Children

Lots of children (and adults alike) rely on screens as a source of entertainment and communication, but this isn’t always the best option for their overall health and well-being. Children need to engage in a variety of different stimulating activities so that they can develop key skills and remain active. So, if you’re wondering how to keep your children entertained without the use of a digital device, here are some suggestions from a sports school in Somerset.

1. Play Outdoors

Weather permitting, outdoor play is a fantastic way to stimulate a child, both physically and emotionally. The fresh air and exercise are not only great for their health and fitnessbut will also boost their mood and fight off stress or anxiety.

As well as the health benefits, outdoor play is great for a child’s learning. They develop skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and risk assessment. All of these skills can then be transferred to other areas of their life, like in a classroom environment, for example. So, spend some time outside with your child; build dens, plant seeds, climb trees, or play ball. Your options are endless.

2. Bake a Cake

Encouraging your child to get involved in the kitchen is a great way to teach them important skills that they’ll need as they grow up, such as how to chop vegetables, how to safely take things out of an oven, or what can and can’t go in a microwave. Not only will your child learn, cooking and baking is great fun and there’s always a tasty treat at the end of it. Maybe you could get everyone involved and host your own family “bake-off”.

3. Get Creative

There are lots of reasons why arts and crafts are beneficial for children. Getting creative is a chance for people to express themselves and explore their sense of self, which is ideal for children who are still figuring things out. It’s also a chance for children to strengthen their fine motor skills, as painting, colouring, and using craft scissors all involved the small muscles in the hands and fingers.

Generally speaking, creative activities are a great way to encourage children to think outside the box, use their imagination and innovate, which ultimately leads to a sense of achievement.

4. Read Books

When it comes to reading, there are countless reasons why its something children should engage in from an early age. It helps them develop a wider vocabulary and become better at spelling and grammar, which will serve them well throughout their education. What’s more, reading expands a child’s general knowledge because they are able to explore different places around the world and varying historical events.

Why not take a trip to the library with your youngster and let them pick out a few books on their own? If you force them to read something that doesn’t interested them, they will never find a love of reading, so it’s better to let them choose their own books.

5. Play Board Games

Board games are great fun and a chance for families to bond, but they can also be educational. Scrabble, for instance, helps children learn new words, while Monopoly is great for numeracy. You could consider introducing family games night once a week, where you’re not allowed to play on your phones or other digital devices. You could each take it in turns to choose a game to keep things fair.

These are just a few ideas to get you started; there are countless other activities that you could suggest to your child if you’re willing to put your imagination to the test.
