A few weeks ago, Arlo chose the Start-Rite Rhino Warrior shoes ready for Year 5.
After wearing Start-Rite shoes for the last few years, we already had high expectations, but I was interested to see how this particular style would cope with everyday school life.
Spoiler alert…
They’ve certainly been put through their paces.
Everyday School Life
Children don’t exactly take it easy on their school shoes.
Between walking to school, running around at breaktime, climbing, football, scooters after school and Forest School sessions, Arlo’s shoes rarely get a chance to rest.
His school follows the OPAL approach to play, encouraging children to spend lots of time outdoors being active, so durability really matters.
From grass to gravel and every surface in between, these shoes are a great practical solution for physically active children.
Not to mention the summer heatwaves which have really put shoes to the test in terms of comfort.
Despite all of this, the Rhino Warrior shoes have held up incredibly well.
Standing Up to Daily Wear
One of the things I noticed first was the toe protection.
Like lots of children, Arlo manages to scuff the front of almost every pair of shoes he owns, so I was pleased to see that the reinforced toe had done exactly what it was designed to do.
He seems to come out of school every day with a new bump slip, wet paper towel and grazes on his knees but the shoes always old up, protecting his feet and keeping me on my toes!
A quick clean and polish is enough to keep them looking smart for school.
The soles have also worn really well despite all the running and climbing he does every day.
Comfort Matters
One thing Arlo commented on throughout the term was how comfortable they felt. We do struggle with footwear as he seems to have wider feet and finds some shoes restrictive and uncomfortable but we got a thumbs up with these.
The rip-tape fastening continued to be a huge advantage.
He’s much more independent now and being able to fasten his own shoes quickly each morning has made getting ready for school much easier.
Even during the warmer weather, he never complained about uncomfortable or overly hot feet, which is always a good sign.
Built for Active Children
Watching Arlo over the last few weeks has reminded me just how much children ask of their school shoes.
They’re expected to cope with classrooms one minute and climbing frames the next, not to mention the using the shoes as brakes on a scooter!
The Rhino Warrior shoes have managed everything without any problems.
They’ve remained supportive, comfortable and, most importantly, still look smart enough for school.
Are Start-Rite Shoes Worth the Money?
For us, the answer is yes.
School shoes are one area where I genuinely think it’s worth investing a little more.
Not only are children wearing them every day, but they’re also supporting growing feet through years of development.
Our experience over the last few years has been that Arlo outgrows his Start-Rite shoes before he wears them out.
That will continue with the Rhino Warrior style.
Quality, comfort, durability and independence all matter to us, and these shoes have delivered on every one.
We’ll definitely be choosing Start-Rite again in the future.
The Rhino Warrior shoes have coped brilliantly with everything Summer Term has thrown at them, from busy playgrounds to after-school adventures, while still looking smart enough for the classroom.
