Exploring Puzzlewood: A Magical Woodland Walk in the Forest of Dean

A child walks along a wooden pathway in a dense, leafy forest, surrounded by rustic wooden railings.

If you’re looking for somewhere that feels completely different to anywhere else, Puzzlewood is exactly that. Tucked away just outside Coleford in the Forest of Dean, this ancient woodland is one of the most enchanting places we’ve ever visited. It’s the kind of place where imagination takes over from the very first step.

Stepping Into a Fairy Tale

When we visited, my son hadn’t seen any of the shows or films that have been filmed there, but it didn’t matter. He was instantly talking about secret woodland fairies, pixies and magical creatures as though he could feel them hiding just out of sight. There’s something about Puzzlewood that just sparks that feeling. It’s hard to describe but so easy to feel.

A person climbs a wooden staircase in a lush, green forest setting with sunlight filtering through the trees.

Within a minute of walking into the trees, you feel like you’ve stepped into a completely different world. It was a really warm day, but under the trees it was shady and cool. The light filtered through the leaves in a way that made the whole place feel like it was glowing. The mossy rocks, wooden bridges and twisting tree roots give it this wild, untouched beauty. It’s hard not to believe there’s something magical hiding just around the corner.

Hidden Corners and Forest Treasures

We followed a signposted route through the woods and took our time using a little treasure map-style sheet to spot different features along the way. There were caves to peek inside, steps to climb, and unexpected paths branching off in every direction. The trail was full of surprises and little moments that made us stop and look more closely.

It’s the kind of walk where you don’t rush. You take it slow, enjoy the quiet, and watch your kids turn into adventurers right in front of you. Every log, root or pile of rocks became something exciting to investigate.

How Long to Spend at Puzzlewood

We spent about an hour and a half walking the trail and could have easily stayed longer. There are benches dotted around, and if you’ve got kids who like to stop and explore, it’s worth giving yourself plenty of time. After the walk, we had a quick look in the gift shop and spotted a small café too, perfect for grabbing drinks or a snack before heading off.

Puzzlewood isn’t pushchair friendly, so I’d say it’s best for confident walkers or younger children in carriers. The paths are uneven in places and there are steps throughout, but our son managed fine and absolutely loved it.

A Filming Location Full of Atmosphere

Puzzlewood has been used as a filming location for everything from Star Wars and Doctor Who to His Dark Materials and Merlin. But you don’t need to be a fan to enjoy it. The forest feels like a movie set all on its own. It has this quiet, timeless atmosphere that makes it really special, no matter your age.
