The songs are starting to play and the shops are beginning to sell decorations, so it can only mean one thing – Christmas is soon approaching. While it may sound too early, if you’re planning to take the kids away for Christmas now may be the time to start organising your getaway.
When thinking of places to go for Christmas, look no further than Europe. The incredibly diverse continent is home to some amazing countries, most of which take Christmas very seriously. In this list, we’ve selected some of our favourite family-friendly destinations to take the kids for a Christmas they’ll never forget.
London, United Kingdom
If you’re thinking of doing a staycation this year, then London is definitely the place to be. Every year, the capital transforms into a festive paradise filled with Christmas markets, opportunities to meet Father Christmas, and shops selling decorations.
It seems the activities here get bigger each year but you can never go wrong with ice skating. You’ll find top-tier skating rinks at Somerset House and The Queen’s House. There’s also the world-famous Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park, showcasing family-friendly performances, high-adrenaline rides, and trendy street food trucks – you can’t miss it!
Since you’ll be staying in the country, you won’t need to worry about organising any flights. All you need to do is reserve your train tickets to London and figure out how you’ll make your way around this vibrant city.
Lapland, Finland
A dream destination for children of all ages, Lapland truly is a special place at Christmas, resembling that of the North Pole. In Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, the kids are able to meet Santa Claus and share their Christmas wishes. They’ll even receive a special certificate to show they have crossed the Arctic Circle.
Your children will also get the opportunity to meet the animals at Elf Reindeer Farm and can even have a go at ice-fishing and snowmobiling. The whole region is regarded for its safety and family-friendly residents, who are well-prepared for hosting you during the Christmas season. Just remember to check what’s included in your package when organising your stay here as you may choose to book additional excursions.
Berlin, Germany
The country where the Christmas markets began, Germany certainly doesn’t hold back when it comes to the festivities. While Berlin is a fantastic location to visit any time of year, it’s the Christmas period where it is extra special, particularly due to the addition of its markets.
Berlin offers nearly 60 Christmas markets in total, more than enough to satisfy the needs of any family. One of the best for young families is the Winterwelt at Potsdamer Platz, a wonderland of winter attractions sporting a huge slide perfect for tobogganing. You’ll also find a variety of huts selling bratwurst and crepes.
