 A first-timer’s guide to all-inclusive holidays

There’s a lot to love about an all-inclusive holiday. These enduringly popular holidays are a go-to for many travellers seeking a stress-free escape with plenty of perks.

These packages offer an enticing blend of relaxation and entertainment, often at surprisingly good value. If you’re new to the all-inclusive experience, here’s a guide to help you navigate this type of getaway.

The appeal of all-inclusive

All-inclusive holidays are popular for their convenience and the freedom that they offer. Unlimited food and drinks and on-site entertainment make it an attractive option for families, couples, and solo travellers alike.

Imagine waking up to breakfast ready and waiting, with a poolside cocktail available by lunchtime, and evening shows without additional cost. For those unfamiliar with this kind of setup, the structure may seem unusual at first, especially when almost everything you want is within reach.

But it’s important to know the basics before you book:

What is and isn’t included?

There are different types of all-inclusive holidays, from family resorts to luxury hotels. But, while the term ‘all-inclusive’suggests that everything is covered, there can be variations depending on the resort. Typically, your package includes meals and drinks (often alcoholic beverages too), along with access to various activities and amenities like pools, gyms, and kids’ clubs if they’re available.

Most family-friendly resorts will also provide some level of childcare, whether that’s supervised play areas or full daycare services. This can be a big draw for parents.

Flights may or may not be part of your package, so double-check before booking. Many all-inclusive packages include airport transfers, but this isn’t guaranteed everywhere. Look into your booking to confirm if transport between the airport and resort is provided and make a note of shuttle meeting points. Some all-inclusive resorts will offer complimentary transport to local attractions too, so it’s worth asking about this when you arrive.

While meals and drinks are covered, some higher-end restaurants on the resort grounds may not be included in the standard package. Similarly, certain activities such as motorised water sports or excursions often cost extra.

Bookings and reservations

With all the included amenities, you might be tempted to take each day as it comes. However, for many activities, like spa treatments and sports, it’s best to book in advance to secure your spot. Similarly, if you have a particular restaurant in mind, making a dinner reservation early is a smart move, especially at more exclusive or popular dining spots. Some resorts allow reservations at check-in, giving you a chance to plan the week without missing out on top experiences.

Importantly, take a moment to review the cancellation policies. Some resorts offer free cancellations within a certain window, but others may retain a deposit if you cancel too late.

Codes to follow

When visiting an all-inclusive resort, it’s important to familiarise yourself with any dress codes or etiquette guidelines

This depends on the resort. A family-friendly resort may be relaxed about attire, but a luxury five-star destination might expect guests to dress smartly for evening meals. This could mean no swimwear in dining areas, long trousers for men, and closed-toe shoes for dinner. Packing accordingly can help you feel comfortable and prepared.

Tipping policies are another important consideration. Tipping at all-inclusive resorts differs from country to country and resort to resort. In some places, a service charge is included in the package price, while in others, tipping staff is encouraged. Check the resort’s terms and conditions or read online reviews beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings.

All-inclusive holidays are relaxing, but planning ahead can ensure you make the most of your stay. As a first-time visitor, it’s worth researching your resort’s specific amenities so that you’ll be able to settle into a holiday that’s both relaxing and enjoyable.
