Win an earth day giveaway bundle worth over £500
Earth Day is Friday 22nd April and is a global event to celebrate the environmental movement and raise awareness about pollution and how to create a clean environment. This is something I’m extremely passionate about and keen to incorporate in to my teaching practice. The 6 R’s are central to the design and technology curriculum.
The 6 R’s
Rethink – our current lifestyles and the way we design and make
Refuse – don’t accept a product if you didn’t need it or think it’s environmentally or socially unsustainable
Reduce – minimise the amount of material use through a products manufacturing and life cycle
Reuse – take an existing product which has become waste and repurpose the parts and materials without processing it.
Recycle – take an existing product which is no longer viable and process the materials for reuse
Repair – when a product breaks down or doesn’t function properly then fix it
Teaching children to think about these through the designing and making of products is a simple yet rewarding concept. For example in the last few months I have seen children use recycled fabrics to make new textile products – our fabric box includes donated clothing, bed linen and even the curtains from the school hall which were replaced recently.
Whilst creating new design ideas and through the modelling process we have been thinking about how to tesselate shapes and limit off cut waste. The discussion around the costs of this embedded some cross curricular learning with calculating the area of the materials being used and then the percentages of waste and the costs involved which emulated an exam question.
This is not something which is taught once as part of a theory but is something which can be included throughout, asking simple questions such as “how can we improve this?” and “why are we doing this?” Helps to challenge our thinking and is a small step in ensuring conscious thinking about the environment becomes part and parcel of our day to day living.
